I've gotta tell you, I've been wanting to make this blog post for some time now.

Because I sell Norwex online, I get orders and speak to customers all over Canada and the United States.

I had the most interesting conversation with an American woman some time back and had to post about it.

She called me one day and we talked for quite some time about many Norwex products. At one point, she finally stopped me and said " Listen, I've got to ask you, what in the world are tea towels?"

I was so surprised. How in the world could she not know what tea towels are? Doesn't she wash dishes, has she ever seen a kitchen? I mean, how is this possible.

So, we got into a discussion about what tea towels are and how you use them. Essentially, they are the towels you use to dry your dishes after you wash them.

She said "Oh, the're dish towels".

Canadians and Americans are very similar and we live close to each other. But, every once in a while, a silly little thing like this pops up to remind us that we are different countries and have different names for some things.

To us, they are tea towels, have always been tea towels and will always be tea towels. For all you Americans visiting my website and my blog, if you are wondering what in the world tea towels are, she tells me you either call them kitchen towels or dish towels.

Over / Incorrect Use of Disinfectants Can Create Superbugs

To sanitize a surface, we need to remove all forms of living bacteria, viruses and fungi from it. This can be done chemically, thermally or mechanically. In the past, many people have over used disinfectants/cleaners that have tried to chemically kill these bugs. Over the years, many bugs have become resistant to these chemicals and are now an even greater risk, particularly to people with weak immune systems.

The traditional method of cleaning with chemicals and cotton cloths results in breaking down dirt and grime and spreading it evenly over the surface. Residual chemicals and dirt provide great opportunities for bugs to grow, not just on moist surfaces, but also within the cleaning cloth itself. When this cloth is later used to clean another surface, it acts as a bug incubation station, transporting germs to the next area or surface you try to clean.

While you may be making a visual difference by removing some dirt and grime from one particular area and spreading it evenly over the rest of the area you are cleaning, you are actually making a huge difference that cannot be seen visually, but it happens hygienically at a microscopic microbial level.

Smell uses the olfactory nerve system through the nose, which is why the smell of cut grass may remind you of childhood, or a particular perfume of someone from your past.

Many people clean surfaces incorrectly, using a chemical that makes the area smell clean (smell like another surface with residuals of that fragrance on it) as opposed to actually removing the contaminants.

True cleanliness does not smell, as there is nothing left behind.

Is it a dish cloth or a tea towel?

Now this is an ever on-going debate among both Norwex customers and Norwex distributors!

Norwex came out with a Kitchen Cloth Set, a 3 pack of kitchen cloths.

The big question? What do you use them for?

In my opinion, the white netted dish cloth is the one and ONLY thing you should ever use for in the sink, washing dishes.

The kitchen cloths were meant not for in the sink washing dishes but for wiping. Countertops, table tops, etc. However, some consultants are selling them and some customers are using them for washing dishes. Then, they wonder why their cloths are getting stinky when Norwex cloths are not supposed to do this.

I am a firm believer that if you are going to wipe your tables, counters, stove, the front of your cupboard, pretty much anything, you should be using the Antibac Enviro Cloth - the staple Norwex item.

These cloths are the high quality microfiber cloths that will pick up 99.9% of bacteria from your surfaces using only water. No cleaning agents or chemicals of any kind are required.

Now, we also have tea towel sets. When you purchase a tea towel set you get a kitchen cloth and a tea towel. Personally, I use them both as tea towels!

In fact, I prefer the smaller ones - the kitchen cloth size. I will use all the small ones from my drawer before I even touch the larger ones. They are a great size for drying dishes!

So, to sum up, I recommend to my customers to use the tea towel sets as tea towels - both of them, the netted dish cloth for in the sink washing dishes and the enviro cloths for all purpose wiping and cleaning. The netted dish cloth should be used with Norwex dishwashing liquid to wash the dishes and the enviro cloths should be used with ONLY water.

Why Bleach is BAD!

The Truth -

Using Bleach is just NOT a good idea!

Bleach has been used around the house as a cleaning agent for years now. People have been putting it in their laundry, using it to disinfect, and cleaning all sorts of surfaces.

In more recent times the use of bleach has become even easier with chlorine (bleach) being used as part of toilet, tub, shower, all purpose, bathroom, and kitchen cleaners. But in reality it is a dangerous product that shouldn't be used.

Problems with Using Bleach:

1: Health issues.

There are a number of different health issues that can be associated with bleach or household cleaners that contain bleach. These include respiratory problems, burned skin, and damage to the nervous system.

In many cases, the use of bleach and cleaners with chlorine irritate problems that people have including allergies and asthma. These are caused as a direct result of the product itself and can be potentially serious.

2: Potential chemical reactions.

Often times the direct physical health issues aren't caused from the product itself, but rather the results of chemical reactions. With bleach there are lots of different reactions that can cause a lot of dangerous situations. Chlorine easily mixes with ammonia and urine which contains ammonia.

This can happen when mixing cleaners (on purpose or accident) and even while cleaning the toilet. The results is a toxic gas which can and sometimes does cause the lungs to stop functioning.

Usually the fumes are noticeable, but sometimes people don't even notice that they are breathing in a potentially life threatening gas. Mixing chlorine with dish soap produces mustard gas, the same gas used to kill many people during World War I.

Many people mix chlorine with dish soap while cleaning the kitchen (both on purpose and on accident). Chlorine also mixes with organic matter creating chloroform. This is a toxin and a known carcinogen. This happens in the house while cleaning the kitchen, the toilet, washing the laundry, and cleaning up food, blood, or other organic messes. This is dangerous to the inhabitants of the house. However, chlorine also mixes with organics in the environment building these toxins up all over the planet.

3: Toxins.

While chlorine isn't toxic to the body, the chemical reactions that often happen with chlorine produce a number of very toxic elements.

Most of these are known as carcinogens, build up in the body as it is exposed to them, and get into the food chain through the water.

Doing your share may not seem like it will help, but every little bit can help make it safer for your family, starting at home.

4: Accidents.

There are a large number of accidents that happen with household cleaners. In 1997 there were 217,989 calls to poison control for household cleaner accidents.

Of those, 54,453 were directly related to bleach and 7,570 were from household cleaners that contain bleach. That means that 28% of household accidents involving cleaners were from bleach alone.

Going green can help prevent accidents from household cleaner and bleach from happening in your home.

5: Pets.

Pets are particularly affected by the fumes of bleach and chlorine based cleaners. They take in less air and can die from a lung-full of chemical filled air. Birds in particular are susceptible to the dangers of bleach.

6: The environment.

If personal dangers, dangers to your family, and pets are not enough then there are the environmental dangers to consider as well.

Toxins produced as a result of bleach use build up in the environment, cause dangers to the water supply, kill fish, harm animals, and get back to people through the food chain.

Bleach is dangerous. It is as simple as that.

Using household cleaners without it sometimes means using a little more "elbow grease" but in the long run it is worth it. There are also safe options that will kill germs, mold, mildew, and help fight stains (hydrogen peroxide is one of them).

If that doesn't convince you, then maybe this will: stay-at-home wives have a 54% higher chance of getting cancer than women who work outside the home. It is believed that this is because they are exposed more to chemicals released by household cleaners, including dangerous items such as bleach.

It's difficult keeping a vehicle clean and orderly - they become like temporary homes, but rarely do they get the same attention and TLC that our houses gets, especially concerning cleanliness.

If you would like to Green Clean your vehicle, you can do so using only a vacuum, the Norwex Antibac Enviro Cloth, a Norwex Window Cloth, Carpet Stain Buster, a Micropad and a bucket of water.

Follow these simple steps to get your vehicle Norwex Clean:

1. Thoroughly vacuum the floors and vehicle upholstery - sorry, there's no Norwex Vacuum!

2. Using a wet Norwex Enviro Cloth, wipe down the interior of your car (dash, steering wheel, doors, door handles, etc.), rinsing your enviro cloth with water as needed. If you have extra dirty surfaces, spray them first with warm water, and let them sit as you wipe the less dirty stuff first - this gives the water time to loosen the grime - then wipe clean with the enviro cloth. If there are scuff marks or the like that your enviro cloth can't remove, use a small piece of a wet Micropad - it will do the trick.

After wiping soiled surfaces, simply rinse under running warm water, and rub it against itself – this releases the dirt and bacteria and washes it down the drain.

Hang to dry.

Wash slightly dirty items with a little Norwex Dishwashing Liquid and use again before laundering. When they need it, they can be washed and dried in your machines using Norwex Ultra Power Plus Laundry Detergent.

If you have any stubborn spots on any of your microfiber,
it would be a good idea to treat them with the

Spot Cleaning:

* For large areas, soak the soiled area with a mixture of 320 ml (10 oz) of Carpet Stain Buster to 4L (1 gallon) of water. (For smaller jobs, use a mixture of ¼ cup Carpet Stain Buster to 4 cups of water.) Try to soak through the backing and carpet pad as well. Scrub the area with a soft clean cloth. Blot as much moisture out as possible.

* Carpet Stain Buster may be used full strength, but be sure to test it in an inconspicuous area first.

Extracting with a carpet cleaning machine:

* Pre-treat heavily soiled areas by spraying on a mixture of 200 ml (6 oz) of Carpet Stain Buster to 4L (1 gallon) of water with a spray bottle.

* Let sit undisturbed for at least 10 minutes.

* Mix 32 ml (1 oz) of Carpet Stain Buster to 4L (1 gallon) of water for the Carpet Cleaning machine and extract over pre-treated and all other areas to be cleaned.

Do Norwex Dryer Balls Actually Work?

Well this is just one of the most commonly asked questions of Norwex consultants.

The answer is, yes, they do work.

Regardless of where you buy your dryer balls, just make sure you buy oval and not round dryer balls. The oval ones move differently in the dryer than the round ones do and work much better.

In addition, as you can imagine or even have experienced, it is not uncommon for a dryer ball to get caught up in a sleeve, fitted bed sheet, sock or some other article in your laundry and when this happens, you no longer have the two dryer balls banging around, against each other and against your laundry.

Well this might not be the most exciting product in the world, however, is super handy and will eliminate your unorganized closet!

This hanger provides the perfect place not only to hang your mop, but also to hang your mop pads and enviro cloths to dry when they are not going in the wash. Norwex NEW Drain Care System!

Norwex Car Wash Mitt

This car wash mitt is perfect for any auto enthusiast. It gently lifts dirt and washes away grime, protecting your vehicles delicate finish because it is designed to reduce the chance of scratching vehicle paint.

One side is made of chenille microfiber for washing the grime off and the other side is microfiber with sponge for a good rinse. This mitt holds water well and debris is easily rinsed out.

How to use the Norwex Car Wash Mitt:

Before washing make sure that the car is in the shade and the paint surface is relatively cool. If you can comfortably hold your hand on the hood, it is a good temperature to wash/wax the car.

Spray the entire car with a gentle spray to thoroughly wet the surface. Work from the top down; re-wetting, washing, and rinsing each section as you go. This way soap or dirty water does not dry onto the paint. Norwex dish liquid is a perfect soap to use to wash.

Car enthusiasts will prefer the new Norwex Car Mitt to other car washing methods.
When rinsing the mitt in the wash bucket rinse well, and every so often hold the top open, allowing it to fill with water. Then lift straight up. As the water runs out, the mitt “back-flushes” the trapped dirt from the mitt.

The flat surface of a traditional sponge can sometimes catch dirt and act like sandpaper; the Norwex Car Mitt allows grit to work up into the long fibers to reduce the risk of scratching the paint during washing.
